Beirut - The UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, yesterday played down Lebanese warnings over alleged Israeli border violations and said peacekeeping troops would deploy toward the frontier.

The Lebanese government had threatened to block UN plans to redeploy UNIFIL peacekeepers, and Hizbullah guerrillas had said that their war of liberation would continue unless the UN removed Israelis they said were still on Lebanese soil. Mr Annan said it was up to the United Nations, not Lebanon, to decide if there actually was a violation.
