ABOUT 100 members of the public were taken by surprise yesterday when they were treated to an unexpected free lunch on Dublin’s Dame Street.

Just after 1.30pm, the pedestrians were guided to chairs at long tables outside City Hall and were persuaded to tuck in to organic and home-grown food as part of a campaign to promote the “Street Feast” initiative.

Organiser and architecture student Sam Bishop from Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, said the event aimed to “encourage communities all around the country to hold a street party on July 18th to rekindle Ireland’s sense of community which appears to be dwindling away”. He said: “We’re calling on communities, in particular recently created ones, to come together and celebrate a local lunch with their neighbours.”

Street Feast parties are already at the advanced planning stage in Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Cork, Galway and Tipperary.
