An explosion at a synagogue in Tunisia that killed 19 people, has been blamed on the al-Qaida network.

Senior Israeli officials say they have intelligence the group was involved in the April blast outside the holy site.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Melchior said: "The person who performed this, according to the information we have, was doing this as an agent as a part of a network of al-Qaida."

He says he believes al-Qaida is operating in Tunisia, thriving on "an expression of deep, deep hatred and fundamentalism against Jews."

If confirmed it would be the network's first completed terror attack since September 11.
