US secretary of state Mr Colin Powell said today he viewed AIDS as a national security problem, adding that we all need to do more to fight the disease that is killing millions of people in Africa.
"AIDS is a national security problem. It is an economic problem. It is a devastating problem especially in Africa, in sub-Saharan African," Mr Powell said on the ABC programme This Week.
"This creates a major problem for Africa and other parts of the world where AIDS is spreading. So it is a pandemic, and it requires our attention," he said.
Mr Powell said the US congress had been generous in funding programmes to fight the disease but that more effort was needed.
