Ahern for talks with new US ambassador

The new US Ambassador to Ireland will today hold talks with the Taoiseach at Government Buildings.

Thomas Foley replaced James Kenny at the US Embassy in Ballsbridge earlier this month.

Chicago-born Mr Foley (54) was nominated for the position in July by President George W. Bush and sworn into office on September 28th.

The father-of-one attended Harvard University with Mr Bush in the early 1970s and they remained close friends.

Mr Foley will pay a courtesy call on the Taoiseach at lunchtime today.

He presented his credentials to President Mary McAleese in Áras an Uachtaráin last week.

Mr Foley worked in Iraq in 2003 and 2004, where he had responsibility for restarting the economy and boosting growth of private businesses and private sector employment.

He oversaw Iraq's 192 state-owned enterprises, developing foreign trade and investment, and advising the ministries of trade and industry.

He received the Department of Defence Distinguished Public Service Award in June, 2004 for his service in Iraq.
