Four US servicemembers and a British soldier were killed in two separate roadside bomb explosions in southern Afghanistan yesterday, NATO-led and British forces said in statements this morning.

Violence in Afghanistan has reached the highest level since the 2001 ouster of the Taliban by US-backed Afghan forces.

Last year the number of US service personnel killed in Afghanistan was more than twice that in 2008.
