The North's Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Industry, Nigel Dodds, has released £8 million in funding in the hope of converting 4,000 new households to renewable energy systems by next year.

Mr Dodds announced that he is to make grants of up to 50 per cent available to persuade Northern Ireland home owners of the attractions of "green" energy systems such as solar panels, wind turbines and wood pellet stoves.

The DUP Minister yesterday launched the television, press, cinema, outdoor and online advertising campaign to highlight the availability of the renewable energy grants, available to the end of the year.

Mr Dodds's department has already paid out £2.5 million in such grants, allowing more than 1,000 people to install renewable energy systems. He is hoping an additional 3,000 householders will avail of these "green" subsidies.

Grants of up to £15,000 are available for people who wish to install domestic renewable energy systems to provide heat, light and power in their homes.

"Northern Ireland currently generates around 95 per cent of its electricity through the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas," said Mr Dodds.

"Government, through the offer of up to 50 per cent Reconnect grant assistance, is committed to increasing the use of renewable energy."
