SUDAN: Donors exceeded Sudan's aid requests yesterday by pledging $4.5 billion (€3.48 billion) to help the south recover from Africa's longest civil war but Washington warned aid hinged on an end to atrocities in Darfur.
The cash will bolster a January deal ending a 21-year war between southern rebels and the government. Pledges to the two-day 60-nation talks in Oslo exceeded a combined $3.6 billion in aid requests for Sudan. Two million died and 4 million fled their homes in the conflict. - (Reuters)
