Algiers - Twenty-one Algerian independent dailies yesterday cancelled their Monday editions to protest against a proposed law which they say stifles press freedom.

About 3,000 human rights and labour activists, opposition leaders and politicians joined editors and journalists in a street demonstration in central Algiers later yesterday to denounce ruling parties for backing the bill.
