Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan has announced the approval of €2.75 million in funding for further community-based CCTV schemes across the country. The funding is part of a nationwide programme to install the systems in towns, cities and suburbs.
The latest round of capital grant funding has been approved for 16 local groups in 12 areas.
The money will be used by the groups to install and run new systems in co-operation with the Garda and local authorities.
The announcement yesterday brings to 42 the number of local community groups awarded capital grant funding. Included on yesterday's list were five groups in Ballymun, Dublin, who have been awarded a total of €1 million to establish schemes in their areas.
Grants were also awarded to groups in west Dublin, Drogheda, Dundalk, Ennis, Kilkenny, Limerick city and suburbs, Longford town, Thurles, Tralee, Mullaghmatt in Co Monaghan and Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim.
Smaller pre-development grants were also awarded for schemes under planning in Athboy and the Dublin suburbs of Darndale, Moatview, Tallaght and the northwest inner city.
