LONDON - Sixteen people were charged yesterday after violence at a rally in support of sacked dock workers. About 1,000 police in riot gear were called in to quell the disturbances on Saturday.

At least four policemen were injured when about 100 protesters, wearing masks and hoods, bombarded them with cans, paint, sticks and smoke bombs at the entrance to Prime Minister John Major's official residence in Downing Street.
