The 1,000th birthday of Waterford's most prominent landmark - Reginald's Tower - is to be marked in the city today.

The celebration is based on the popular belief that the tower was built in 1003AD, as proclaimed on a limestone plaque erected on the tower in the early 19th century.

The present structure dates from the late 12th century and is the oldest urban civic building in the State. It has recently been restored to its medieval appearance under the supervision of the Department of the Environment and Local Government and Waterford City Council.

A spectacular sound and light show, including a pyrotechnic display by Waterford street theatre company Spraoí, will tonight focus on the tower. The show begins at nightfall (after 10pm).
