SECONDHANDSENSE:CAR MANUFACTURERS are forever trying to flog the concept of "emotional" design leading to an "emotional" driving experience. Few are capable of delivering the goods, which is why there is a substantial difference between a Ford and a Ferrari.

In the middle ground, well-designed, interesting cars are rare. There are exceptions, though, and a man named Walter de Silva is responsible for some of the most memorable.

He designed the Alfa Romeo 156, which combined great styling with great value. Such was its success that he was poached by the VW group to replicate that success across the Seat range, which was in need of a re-vamp and an individual’s stamp – and he didn’t disappoint.

One of his creations was the Altea, a move away from the traditional family hatchback clone into a position between hatchback and small people carrier. The Altea has not made a huge impact, but it is a well-designed car that is both clever and practical. It deserves consideration if you’re looking for something different – and won’t blow the bank as it doesn’t have the image of a VW Golf Plus, for example.

The Altea is striking and tall, giving great interior space and headroom. The overall ambience and interior styling are pleasant but some say the finish is not up to VW standard. It is a five-seater with rear seats that fold completely and also slide to increase space. Another clever feature is that wipers sit at the sides of the windscreen for a clearer view. Front pillars, however, are thick lower down and can create visibility problems.

It comes with a choice of engines but the most practical are the 1.6 petrol or the 1.9 TDi diesel – both of which are familiar from cars in the VW group.

The car comes with a maximum five-star EuroNCAP rating. Reliability is good. There have been problems with cruise control, fuel pumps and clutches, but numbers affected have been minimal.

A 2006 car with 1.6 petrol engine and alloys, electric windows, air conditioning, ABS, traction control, multiple airbags, metallic paint and 49,000km is €10,750. A 2007 model with diesel engine and 34,000 km is €15,750.
