This photo shows the next generation Mercedes C-Class caught testing. It will be some time before the car actually takes to the road, with an official unveiling expected at next year's Geneva motor show in February. An estate version will arrive in autumn 2007, followed by a new CLK version.

Although the new C-Class will share more of its components than before with the larger E-Class, the next C-Class is said to be much sharper to drive and more distinctive as a range in its own right: Mercedes is to position it as a proper small sports saloon, rather than simply a smaller answer to the E-Class.

In terms of features, air suspension or active-body control have been ruled out due to cost restraints.

The base engine will be a direct injection 4-cylinder 1.8-litre with two horse power levels on offer: 150bhp and 190bhp. Other petrol engines offered include a 2.5-litre 210bhp version and a 3.5-litre V6 270bhp unit.

A high performance AMG 5.4-litre version will also be offered, with power increased from the current 360bhp to 410bhp, in order to compete with the likes of the new Audi RS4 and future BMW M3.

Also a 3-litre diesel is planned as well as the new iDrive-like operating system found in the new S-Class.

The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system will also remain available as well.
