AUDI GETS ROWDY:New A3 versions take on Mercs and Beemers

Audi is preparing to launch two new derivatives of its popular A3 luxury hatchback

Audi is preparing to launch two new derivatives of its popular A3 luxury hatchback. The three-door model, launched here in the past few weeks, is to be joined by a five-door version with a different front grille and an "all-road" version.

Unlike the other premium German marques, Audi does not yet have an entrant in every market niche. However, it will start with derivatives of the brand-new A3.

The new three-door version is available in three modes – a 1.6-litre 102 bhp five-speed petrol version at 1 25,950; a 2-litre 150 bhp FSI six-speed version at 1 31,950; and a 2-litre TDI diesel option offering 140 bhp at 1 32,500. Audi plans to develop its Steppenwolf concept car into a production version, using the new A3’s chassis and design, a refined quattro all-wheel-drive system and powerful petrol engines as well as TDIs. It’s likely to go on sale in late 2005 as the A3 Allroad.

However, the Steppenwolf SUV will not be a full off-roader. Instead, Audi is developing a separate model aimed at BMW’s new X3 and is planning to introduce it in 2006.

As for the five-door A3 version, due here next year, it features a slightly different grille with one large front air-intake reminiscent of the Auto Union race cars of the 1930s. The five-door model also features the new shape created by designer Walter de Silva which will feature on the new Audi models for the next few years – with dynamically rising waist-lines, prominent sills and bowing roof-lines.

The new five-door A3 will be more than a regular A3 with two more doors. It will be marketed as the Sportsback, offering slightly more room in the rear and a significantly enlarged boot. Though based on the standard A3 chassis and equipped with the new multi-link rear axle and electro-mechanic power steering, the Sportsback will be 10 centimetres longer with a longer rear overhang. Luggage-space should be well over 400 litres. The engine-range for the five-door Sportsback will start with the 150 bhp FSI. Diesel fans will be offered the 140 bhpTDI, with a 102 bhp petrol engine following later.
