An Taisce objects to tower: Plans to build more than 400 apartments, including a 17-storey tower, in Sandyford, Dublin 18, have been been criticised by An Taisce which has written to An Bord Pleanála outlining its opposition to the development.
Cork developer John Fleming's Glencairn Developments has secured permission to build 405 residential units on a 5.7-acre site off Murphystown Road - the lands originally formed part of Glencairn, the mansion and extensive grounds which was once home to the British ambassador.
A "massive" development of this size cannot be "absorbed" into its existing context, according to An Taisce. In the absence of a policy for tall buildings, the 17-storey tower should not be permitted, it stated.
"The selection of sites for high buildings should in no circumstances be in the hands of developers whose interests are not necessarily compatible with regional strategic objectives," it stated.
Stillorgan tower appealed
Residents in the Stillorgan area of south Dublin have appealed permission for a major mixed-use development at the Stillorgan Bowl Leisureplex, including plans for a residential development with a 15-storey tower.
The owners of the bowling facility, Ciarán and Colum Butler, were given approval for 314 apartments, a library, commercial and retail space, and a new Leisureplex and gym in 15 blocks on the 1.59-hectare site. Fifteen individual residents and local associations have appealed the decision.
Plans for 873 apartments
Plans for 743 apartments and houses at Ballynakelly and Newcastle South, in Newcastle-Lyons, south Co Dublin have been lodged with South Dublin County Council.
Tenbury Developments Ltd is also seeking permission to build a neighbourhood centre, including a public house, off licence and restaurant on the 23-hectare site at Newcastle-Lyons.
Meanwhile, plans for 130 apartments at a former concrete plant in East Wall have been submitted to Dublin City Council.
Readymix (ROI) Ltd is seeking permission to build the apartments in blocks ranging in height from three to 12 storeys at numbers 5 to 23 East Wall Road, Dublin 3.
