Postcards from the past

Whyte's auction in Dublin next Saturday certainly lives up to its title: "The Eclectic Collector" with more than 500 lots of interest to collectors of postcards, coins, banknotes, entertainment memorabilia, medals and badges, vintage cameras, photographs, sporting items and, rock and pop memorabilia.

A huge selection of Irish postcards – mostly topographical scenes from the period 1900 to 1920, amassed by Dublin collector Peter Holder, will be sold in batches such as Lot 53, which has 29 cards including early 20th century images of Grafton Street with shops, trams and carriages (€80-€100).

A 19th-century mahogany coin cabinet “containing a good range of Roman Republic and Imperial denarii and dupondii” is estimated at €2,000-€3,000.

An Ireland Currency Commission Lady Lavery £100 note, one of many collectible banknotes in the auction, is estimated at €2,000-€2,500.

Among examples of vintage advertising are two mid-20th century Gold Flake cigarettes Irish language enamel signs with the slogan "Sásuíonn siad" (They satisfy) – each estimated at €300-€500. Fans of Madame Tussauds-style kitsch may be interested in the work of Paul Crees described as "a modern master of the poured wax doll" whose 27 inches high, 1997 wax doll of the late Princess Diana "wearing her ivory silk taffeta and antique lace bridal gown" (number two of a limited edition of 10) is estimated at €2,000-€2,500.
