A seller’s search for Scottish artworks

Important paintings by Scottish artists occasionally turn up in private collections in Ireland and can be quite valuable. Chris Brickley, head of the picture department for international auctioneers Bonhams in Scotland, will visit Dublin later this month seeking consignments for the company's 17th annual Scottish sale, to be held in Edinburgh in April.

On his last visit to Dublin, Mr Brickley found works by leading Scottish artists including Anne Redpath, whose still life Flowers in a Spotted Jug went on to fetch more than £85,000 at auction; and Patrick Adam, whose painting The Studio of FCB Cadell sold for £38,000.

Mr Brickley said: “The strong historic links between Ireland and Scotland are well known, and many collectors [in Ireland] possess Scottish paintings. "Demand for quality Scottish art is very high in the current buoyant market, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we turn up on this visit."

Bonhams' Scottish sale will take place over two days – April 12th and 13th – in the Bonhams Edinburgh saleroom, which is situated at 22 Queen Street.

It will feature works by leading Scottish artists as well as a range of objects related to Scotland, ranging from highland dress and weapons to silver and glass and books, furniture and ceramics.
