Wear it out: Student style mixing tacky, grungy and chic

Megan Russel sees fashion as an opportunity for self-expression and pushing boundaries

College student Megan Russel has a look you will remember. She is brave with her style choices and isn’t afraid to push the fashion boundaries. We had a chat with her about how to source a look like hers.

Tell us about your outfit today?

I bought both the top and trousers in Urban Outfitters. I wear the denim trousers all the time, they always tend to lend striking quality to anything I wear.

The turtleneck washes me out because I’m so pale but I love it! I bought the jacket for just €4 in a charity shop in Valentia, a little island off Kerry. I got the got the shoes from YRU and I basically live in them. Slightly awkward to walk on the cobblestones in but they’re definitely worth it.

They’re brilliantly gothic so the contrast so well with the yellow and white.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is very versatile and reflects my personality. I like to think that fashion is an art of unspoken word and acts as a language between individuals. It is a medium of self-expression. I am constantly experimenting with elegant, tacky, ugly, chic and grunge styles as I develop.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

There is a surprising amount of fashion shows that take place during the summer.

One of them being the Valencia Fashion Show which I am hoping to draw inspiration from for future styling. Electric Picnic is also a hub for insane outfits and costumes which I can’t wait to see.
