Cycling back to front

The sideways bike invented by Dubliner Michael Killian a decade ago is still causing international headlines whenever it appears in public (Shanghai Daily, Die Welt, International Herald Tribune).

This cross between a bicycle and a snowboard is steered by handles attached to both the front and back wheels. It requires the forward-backwards balance of a snowboarder rather than the conventional side-to-side balance of a cyclist, or skier, but once mastered offers surprising manoeuvrability. BBC's Dragons Den turned down the inventor in 2007. As Ireland re-embraces cycling might Gavin Duffy and his team be more supportive? www.sidewaysbike.com
