Back to black

Black is back - so long as it is simple and sophisticated, with not a sequin in sight, writes Deirdre McQuillan.

Black needs no introduction to winter gatherings when it comes to dressing up. The new ladylike look can mean a demure black silk dress with a hint of volume in its skirt, or a figure skimming number that relies for its effect on shape and skilful cut.

It’s all about subtle sophistication and move away from flashy sequins and lavish embellishment. All-black ensembles are always winners when it comes to party wear, but the look can be brightened up with a hint of light gold mesh brocade, dark embroidery, or a sharp white wrap shirt. Skirts that are full demand taut topping to balance the shape, but tighter, curvier and sexier skirts worn with a spliced or draped top make the back the new focus of attention.

Slick simplicity harks back to a couture look, but updated with lighter, more supple fabrics and hints of frivolity in shoes and accessories.
