A reader writes . . . I've found myself with a little extra cash because of an unexpected Christmas bonus, and I want to invest in some pieces for spring/summer. I'm quite a classic dresser, so no crazy prints, but I want to try some more fashion-forward stuff before I'm too old – and I work in quite a fashionable office and am a bit tired of looking and feeling like the poor relation. Lucky you! It’s lovely – and somewhat rare of late – to have a bit of extra cash, and investment is always wise. My only caveat would be that I wouldn’t invest too heavily in spring/summer, per se: Ireland’s sunny season is fleeting, at best, so instead look at versatile pieces that will work for the office and in your day-to-day life, that will go the distance and that won’t be relegated to the scrap heap once our week-long “heatwave” is over.

For the coming season, pastels are going to be huge – which means that investing in some pale, cool neutrals is worth the risk, and if you play your cards right you could get some items that will work with your wardrobe, whatever the occasion.

This blush-pink top (€264) by Vivienne Westwood Anglomania, from my-wardrobe.com, is a gorgeous wear-anywhere choice, demure enough for the office and figure-flattering.

Also from my-wardrobe.com, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s printed-sleeve silk shirt ( €414) is perfect for jeans or trousers or tucked into high-waisted skirts, and will last through several seasons.

Shoewise, Acne’s Pistol boots (€400) are not going anywhere: they’ve been the ankle boot to be seen in for a year or so, and they will go with everything. Plus, the ankle boot is far more chic than the knee-high. (You heard it here first.)

In shoe trends, heel heights have come down a bit, but the pointed toe is back. These two-tone Pierre Hardy pumps ( €420), from Net-a- Porter.com, are beautiful and versatile.

If you’re on the hunt for one statement piece, this Camilla Marc blazer (€739.75), from Asos.com, is your man. It’s a beautifully cut double-breasted blazer, heavy enough to wear as a coat, with a silk scarf, and light enough to wear to the office with some ankle-grazing skinny trousers – and the neon sleeves give it the oomph to make it covetable.

Dorothy Perkins’ galactic jacket will protect you from the elements when you’re out and about – and the metallic sheen will keep you looking cool. €45 (from February)
