Dublin Bus vehicle catches fire in Donnybrook but no injuries reported

A Dublin Bus vehicle caught fire at a junction near Donnybrook, south Dublin on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services responded to the incident shortly after 9am and extinguished the blaze about an hour later at 10.05am. Nobody was injured.

The bus was stopped on the R138 Morehampton Road at the junction with Appian Way in a northbound lane.

A passenger on the bus said they heard a “loud noise” before being asked to get off. It is understood the fire began at the back of the vehicle.

Significant fire damage was visible on both levels of the vehicle, mostly at the back of the bus where the engine is located.

Smoke from the bus disrupted traffic on several roads in the area.

The bus was towed from Donnybrook by a rescue vehicle shortly after 11am to be brought to a depot.

In a statement, Dublin Bus said “all passengers were evacuated from the bus” and that no one was injured.

“Dublin Bus has begun a full investigation into the incident,” said a spokesperson.

Two fire engines, an ambulance and senior officer from Dublin Fire Brigade’s Donnybrook station attended the incident.

“Numerous” 999 calls were made to the fire service in relation to the incident, said a Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman.

“Firefighters in breathing apparatus used high-pressure hose reels to extinguish [the fire] and the ambulance from Donnybrook fire station was released from the scene as no injuries were reported,” he said.

“The inbound carriageway was closed to traffic during the firefighting operation whilst outbound traffic continued to flow.”

The service said the cause of the fire would be determined by gardaí.

In a notice to customers, Dublin Bus said that “due to an incident, Morehampton Street is closed” and that E1 and E2 buses travelling northbound and southbound would be diverted.

Buses heading into the city will divert down Waterloo Road and Baggot Street before turning on to Pembroke Street Upper and back on to their normal routes.

Southbound buses will follow the same diversion in reverse. Dublin Bus said the diversions would continue until further notice.
