A lot has been happening for Theatre Upstairs, the modest theatre space devoted to new writing on the Liffey. Recently it refurbished its auditorium, switched its main agenda from lunchtime slots to evening performances, and welcomed the young company Bitter Like a Lemon as artists in residence. Following Lee Coffey's Peruvian Voodoo, an over-amped monologue play from Mark O'Rowe's blueprint, comes something more earth-bound, Emily Gillmor Murphy's play about a teenager trying to cope with his brother's suicide in an age of internet virality. It’s a neat idea for a group show. Curator Anne Mullee marshalls four artists, Damien Flood, Veronica Forsgren, Tom Watt and Sarah Baker, whose work takes on the idea of products gone bad, expanding the concept into ideas of defunct belief systems, dysfunction in general and consumerist culture.
