What’s on Saturday: Popical Island, Kenny Dope and The Field

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Popical Island Fifth Birthday Bash
Whelan's Upstairs, Dublin 3pm €5 whelanslive.com
Five years? Really? Doesn't time fly when you're having a blast? Happy birthday to Popical Island, then, and thanks for all the quality indie releases and bands you've thrown at us. Acts performing at this special celebration include Squarehead, Walpurgis Family, Ginnels, Paddy Hanna, Groom and Land Lovers.

LEGEND
Kenny Dope
Opium Rooms, Dublin 11pm €12 facebook.com/KennyDopeMusic

We throw the "legend" term around like discarded betting slips at the dog track but, in the case of Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, the tag is well deserved. One half of the Masters At Work crew with Little Louie Vega, Gonzalez has been turning heads with his disco, house, Latin, jazz, funk and soul for almost 30 years. If you want the sound of New York City having a blast on the dancefloor, this is the only show in town tonight.

HOUSE
The Field
The Hangar, Dublin 10.30pm €15/€13.50/€12 soundcloud.com/kompakt

When Alex Willner goes to work, the results are mesmerising. The Stockholm-born, Berlin-based producer has made his mark with bespoke, hypnotic grooves and textures on albums like From Here We Go Sublime and Yesterday and Today. Since Willner first arrived on the scene with singles for Kompakt and a head-turning remix of Annie's Heartbeat, he has shown a sure-footed ability to create enticing, exacting sounds. Support from Eoin Monaghan and Conor Feeney.

HOUSE
Bontan
Crystal, Waterford 11pm €12/€10/€8 facebook.com/BontanUK

Bontan first stepped up to the decks as a young gun in thrall to such classic underground house dons as Kerri Chandler, Kenny Dope and Derrick Carter. It wasn't long until he was showing his own smarts with releases like Hit It From the Back for Pleasurekraft's Kraftek label before a rake of other imprints tapped him for productions and mixes. Support from Gary Fitz and Dael O'Brien.
