It was probably always on the cards that Jose Maria Gutierrez Hernandez was going to make music. Growing up in Buenos Aires in a family of orchestra directors, saxophone players and pianists, Guti initially thought about writing and painting before music took over. Initially a member of successful rock band Jovenes Pordioseros, Guti eventually turned to house music and releases for the DFTD, Defected and Wolf + Lamb labels, such as Patio de Juegos and Mr Good Vibes, spread the word about his skills. Support from the Melodic and Abstract crews.

kincoratradweekend.com

Although Clare is a hotbed of traditional music, this neck of the woods has been at some remove from the action. This boutique festival, on the shores of Lough Derg, takes in the towns of Killaloe and Ballina, where some fine musicians will gather tonight, including Michael Piper Cooney, Tim Dennehy, Seamus Brogan and more. Expect intimate sessions to emerge after the opening-night concert in the cathedral. Continues throughout the weekend.

THEATRE

The Games People Play
Draíocht, Blanchardstown. 8pm €16/€14
draoicht.ie

Niamh and Oisín aren’t getting any younger. That’s a cruel fate for anyone who has ever taken up residence, if only temporarily, in Tír na nÓg, but the protagonists of Gavin Kostick’s award-winning play for Rise Productions are now confined to a different kind of stasis, the negative-equity generation, trapped, threatened and somehow still leisure- addled. Over an evening of intimate discussion, games and chances, Lorna Quinn and Aonghus Óg McAnally bring the fraught new Irish emblems together to contemplate their future.

JAZZ

Listen at Wellington
Wellington, Baggot st. bridge, 7pm, €10/€5,

Composer Dylan Rynhart’s genre-defying salon, upstairs at the Welly, is providing a much- needed platform for new music in the capital and a much-appreciated night out for the open of ear. This month’s roster of serious talent includes early music experimenters the Gregory Walkers; Re:Ellington, a new group re-examining the work of Duke Ellington; poetry from comedian Helen McNulty; and Rynhart’s own superb Fuzzy Logic Ensemble.
