When you are as unknown as the cast of your first film, and yet hope it will stand out among the hundreds of movies competing for audiences and distributors at the Toronto festival, it helps to give it an arresting title.
Canadian director Martin Gero pushed the envelope by calling his movie Young People Fucking. Even though these youngsters spend most of the time talking about sexual acts, the film has attracted packed houses and reams of publicity at the festival.
Even more coverage was generated when the post-premiere party was held in Wicked, a downtown swingers club. I could not attend because I was busy watching some meaningful movie about the state of the world. However, indefatigable Toronto Star columnist Rita Zekas noted that the Wicked pole dancers "appeared either so sleepy that the only thing holding them up was the pole, or so bored that one of them actually checked her messages while gyrating, giving an entirely new meaning to phone sex".
