SLIDE
Overneath
Claddagh
****

Slide burrow deep beneath tunes, propelled by the finesse of bouzouki, flute, concertina and fiddle. Third time out they're joined by vocalist Andrew Murray - a risky endeavour, but one that works most of the time. Murray's vocal cords lie belly deep, and his own Shooting Star is a refreshing 21st-century take on Dónal Óg. Overneath is laden with cerebral arrangements that make much of Daire Bracken's fiery fiddle and Aogán Lynch's subtle concertina lines, and Mick Broderick's The King of Kilrickle is a gorgeous excuse for the marriage of concertina and bouzouki. Éamonn De Barra's flute lines are magical, though Slide's keyboards are at times distracting. A slow burner, Overneath is a snapshot of a band in glorious and continual evolution. www.slide.ie SIOBHÁN LONG
