Strobe lights, Bob Calvert spouting sci-fi doggeral, Lemmy Kilminster's sonic aberrations, Nik Turner's psycho sax and topless dancer Stacia's 42D breasts and the way they might look at you. For people unaware of Hawkwind, here's a pithy primer: they were the one of the best pre-punk bands, a bunch of hardcore, virtually anarcho-hippie squatters out of London's Ladbroke Grove who fused tranced-out Krautrock and searing synthesiser riffs with the kind of lyrics that appealed to fans of speculative fiction writers Alfred Bester and Philip K Dick. Anyone expecting cogent tunes had better look elsewhere - here be scuzzy, sandblasted drones with the power to scrub off encrusted cobwebs and the detritus of brown-fingered Rizla users. This fine Collectors Edition includes a DVD featuring live performances, promo clips of Silver Machine and Urban Guerilla, and a question: whatever happened to Stacia? TONY CLAYTON-LEA
