No, it isn’t the most cheery band name we’ve come across, and it’s the devil if you Google it, but New York’s Exitmusic make their point with some of the coolest rhythms we’ve heard in some time.
Formed around the core of married couple Devon Church and Aleksa Palladino (some might know the latter from her excellent performances as Angela Darmody in Boardwalk Empire), Exitmusic ply a peculiar kind of trade. While a Radiohead album comes immediately to mind (that’s Kid A, not The Bends), shuffling up alongside is a beguiling blend of noir-Americana and a slightly weird version of folk-goes-goth (or is it the other way around?).
Whatever way you slice it, there is singular talent here; the band’s debut album, Passage, will be pilfered for tunes, so that’s good, yes?
