Pop Corner: Bad Love, Rihanna love, One Direction love, but no love for ‘I Love It’

Our fave indie-pop twosome are back, Rihanna is representing and Ashton 5SOS feels One Direction’s pain

Track of the week

Summer Camp - Bad Love
Our fave indie-pop twosome (Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey) have returned to the world of pop. Featuring the excellent line, "You fell for me, but you tripped up," it's about a relationship that was good for all the wrong reasons. There's a driving drum machine beat, a pulsing synth and a bucketload of harmonies. What more could you want?

Hero of the week
Rihanna, for representing all girls. Rih told Essence magazine that she took her latest movie role (in Home) because: "We wanted girls to just feel strong and brave, empowered, beautiful and that they can do anything. They can take charge of their life or situation, no matter what." She went on, "I think we were really, really careful especially with the animation to make sure that she wore the right things. That her body was not unrealistic, you know, and I think for kids, that's really special for young girls."

Ashton 5SOS has some words of support for One Direction. He told MTV news, “I heard about that and I was at rehearsal and I was looking at these dudes and, man, I’d be devastated if someone left our band, you know? I can’t imagine how the other dudes feel. And I wish him all the best. I hope. . . if that’s a choice he wanted to make, you know? I hope everything goes well.”

Zero of the week
I Love It
, according to Charli XCX. She told the London Times, "I wrote I Love It in a hotel room in half an hour. The next day I gave it to my producer and told him I thought it was s**t, so he sent it to the girls in Icona Pop and a week later they recorded it. That's what made the next year so awful. I made what I thought was a genius pop album and all anyone wanted to talk about was I Love It. I was so bummed out that I decided I hated pop music. After the success of I Love It, I was inundated with offers to write I Love It mark II."
