Nino Machaidze: Arias and Scenes

Georgian Nino Machaidze is an up-and coming lyric soprano who has made her mark in the opera houses of Europe over the past few years. Arias and Scenes is a compendium of some roles she has played on stage and others of greater weight that she plans to perform in the near future. The result is somewhat mixed: there is sensitive and lyrical phrasing and singing, though in some tracks the singing is less assured. This is especially true in the higher register, where Machaidze can sound shrill and unsteady. She is best in the Italian arias, where her vocal colouring is effective, but less so in the French repertoire. Machaidze is accompanied in the Manon and Hamlet tracks by Atalla Ayan, a young Brazilian tenor who makes an impressive debut here. sony.com
