Future Bass, Soul Jazz****

This was the year dubstep headed for the next level with several cracking albums (Darkstar, Mount Kimbie) and even a supergroup (Magnetic Man) coming to the fore. With the likes of James Blake and Katy B ready for lift-off in 2011, this compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz label is a fine indicator of what might be to come from the subwoofers, with a smattering of familiar names (Untold, Four Tet and Mala) rubbing shoulders with newcomers such as Randomer and Distal. All involved are predicting different futures for the bassbin-bothering game, from the magnificent boogie- headrush of Ramadanman's Bass Drumsand the techno spread inhabited by Four Tet's Nothing to Seeto Distal's lovely sunny swing and Untold's dance-floor grandstanding.
