Black Hole, Domino***

Anyone out there recall the rallying cry of "no future"? Culled from The Stooges' No Fun, the late-1970s punks in California were listening with one ear cocked. Away from the epicentres of punk activity (London and New York), and stranded in the vacuous entertainment capital of the universe, most of the acts here (compiled by music critic and pop-culture commentator Jon Savage) never broke outside their own neighbourhood. So while we know Dead Kennedys ( California Über Alles), Germs ( Forming) and X ( We're Desperate), we know damn all about The Avengers ( We Are the One), The Bags ( Survive) and The Aurora Pushups ( Victims of Terrorism). Some of the music should have stayed in the garage ( Black Holeby The Urinals is as grim as you'd think), but overall a service has been provided – a testament to a once vital movement.
