If last year’s Passed Me By/We Stay Together was the sound of DJ/producer Andy Stott striding away from the pack, Luxury Problems is where he touches down in a whole new galaxy. There are few who can match Stott’s skills as a techno futurist, and the new album’s dark, hynotic drones and grooves allow him to throw, finesse and plaster sounds around with abandon. Stott is a fan of heavyweight textures and patterns, loading Luxury Problems with menacing thumps and thuds that rattle and hum with savage intent. Occasionally you get ethereal sighs and lines from his former piano teacher Alison Skidmore (Hatch the Plan, Numb ), but these are drenched in mechanical and industrial shades to create uneasy, noir-ish rhythms. As deep, dark music goes, Luxury Problems is in a league of its own.
