"For me, film is completely dead," David Lynch declared when he presented Inland Empire, his first feature in six years, at the New York Film Festival. He vowed never to work on celluloid again.

"Film gets dirty and breaks and scratches, and the equipment is heavy," he said. "It's like swimming through cold molasses." He said that he "fell in love with the digital look" during early tests in the medium and making shorts for his website, www.davidlynch.com.

Asked about a New York Times review that detected the influence of Luis Buñuel on Inland Empire, Lynch said, "I'm not a film buff. I'm really not familiar with Buñuel."
