SEVERAL new biopics of Oscar Wilde have been mooted in recent years, including one said to be directed by Mike Nichols and starring Liam Neeson in the leading role, with Hugh Grant as Lord Alfred Douglas. The future of that project looks uncertain now that Brian Gilbert's film, to be titled Wilde, is set to start shooting this month in London. Based on Richard Ellmann's biography of Wilde, the film will feature Stephen Fry in the title role, with the young English stage and film actor, Jude Law (from Shopping) as Lord Alfred and Vanessa Redgrave as Wilde's mother.

Vanessa Redgrave is at present playing the title role in the film of Virginia WooIfs Mrs Dalloway, which is filming at Shepperton Studios outside London under Dutch director Marleen Gorris, who won the foreign film Oscar this year for Antonia's Line. The cast of Mrs Dalloway also features Rupert Graves, Natascha McElhone and Michael Kitchen.
