Picked on for his size, his lace
a source of teasing by the others,
sent out to extinguish
The Easter Candle.
Alpha and Omega, the wick
lies beyond his tiptoed reach,
afraid to fail, to face the mockery,
he grasps the beeswax in both hands,
eases it up and out of the holder
in arcing elevation:
The molten cup descends upon
his head in fiery baptism:
Crowning the martyr,
capping the jester.

Today’s poem is from Iggy McGovern’s recent collection, Hammer & Spark (Quaternia Press)
