FACEBOOK IS really pushing the boat out. With Google+ rumoured to have up to 10 million users already, after only a few weeks and a limited field trial, the social network seems keen to make sure that users know it’s still a major player.

Hot on the heels of the new video and group chat is Facebook for Every Phone, an app that works with 2,500 Java-enabled mobile phones. It is also optimised to use less data, so it will be cheaper to use than other Java apps.

So now it’s not only iPhone, Android and Blackberry users that get their own app. Facebook is working on making it compatible with other handsets too.

WATCH: Get your own part in a major film

A NEW film is tapping into the social media craze by inviting users of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to play a part in the film. Starring Emmy Rossum and directed by DJ Caruso, the short film Insidetells the story of a girl who wakes up to find herself trapped in a room, with only a laptop.

Users will be able to affect the plot, interact with characters in real time and they could earn a cameo in the final film.

The project, which is being funded by Toshiba and Intel, goes live on July 25th..

THE VODAFONE Comedy Festival kicks off on July 21st and, as is becoming the norm, there is an app for that.

In keeping with the general theme of things, the comedy festival app has a colourful user interface, offering users a way to keep track of the acts they want to see, whether it is Tommy Tiernan, Jason Byrne or PJ Gallagher.

There is a planner, an interactive map and an augmented reality feature to explore the festival. It even lets you try your hand at stand-up, with the Comedy Box. It is available for both Android and Apple.
