British unemployment plunged to a 17-year low last month, when the 22nd monthly fall in a row took the rate to 5 per cent of the workforce, official figures showed yesterday.

The data was accompanied by a sharp rise in average earnings, which rose for the first time since mid-1997, by 0.25 percentage points to 4.75 per cent in November.
