Too much choice leaves companies confused

A new Microsoft survey has found a large proportion of businesses are confused about developments in desktop technology and what type of systems they should run. In the survey of 100 top British companies, conducted in June, over half said they were confused about the number of options. Of those surveyed, 71 per cent said they had standardised their computers with the basic Wintel technology a 32MB PC operating Microsoft's Windows 95. But 64 per cent said they would be leaving new desktop developments out of their business strategy because of confusion. The survey also revealed that the Year 2000, or the millennium bug, was the biggest influence in deciding what desktop strategy a company would follow.
