For all the talk of games promoting violence, titles such as Thief actively discourage it. As Garret, an expert burglar in a fictional town, you generally avoid conflict, finding ways in and out of buildings with the subtlety of a whisper. It's an atmospheric game, set in a damp city of muted colours. In this decent story, your character is an amnesiac who must unravel a mystery and find out what happened on the night he lost his memory. And, of course, he robs a few businesses and residences along the way. The city has a strong police presence, but Garret is a gifted burglar with nifty gadgets including arrows that can choke guards, extinguish flames or cause explosions. It could be argued that in Thief 's long absence (the last in the series appeared a decade ago), Dishonoured has deftly stolen its crown as the king of the stealth franchise. Still, this is an attractive, solid and playable game. thiefgame.com
