Tender to advance high speed broadband access

The Government has initiated a programme to roll out high-speed broadband to some sparsely populated areas.

Yesterday the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources tendered a contract for consultants to help implement the National Broadband Plan.

The scheme aims to upgrade existing services to high-speed connections that will range from 30-100Mbps.

However, it is now seeking expertise in identifying areas that will not be financially viable for commercial operators.

It will then set out plans to offer contracts for a range of potential companies to roll out services.

While officials declined to comment on its potential value, it is understood the successful party would likely attract a significant six-figure fee. The actual roll-out of broadband connections will not begin for at least another year.

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said that he expected one million homes to have access to high speed services.

“However, my concern is to ensure that less densely populated areas will also receive very fast broadband.”
