THE TAOISEACH and his Ministers will continue to canvass across the State in the days ahead as Thursday’s fiscal treaty referendum looms closer.
One wonders whether Enda Kenny will unleash his handlers on Cabinet members this week to ensure they don’t let any more cats out of the bag about referendum reruns, and to make sure there are no more unfortunate cheese quips.
Michael for Finance Michael Noonan managed to offend a large swathe of the public, not to mention former Greek prime minister George Papandreou, with the rather insensitive suggestion that the extent of our trade links with Greece went no further than feta.
The Minister’s insistence that he was simply trying to stop contagion failed to stem the criticism.
Today, Noonan has a chance to score some brownie points and move on from the cheese business. The Minister returns to his old stomping ground in Limerick for a win-win engagement this morning.
At the University of Limerick’s Kemmy Business School, he will be announcing a number of highly skilled new jobs at Action Point, an indigenous firm specialising in software development and IT infrastructure.
It is the perfect opportunity to get some positive headlines – as long as he doesn’t mention cheese, it’s a feta accompli.
