“History is our playground,” says the company within Assassin’s Creed: Liberation. The umpteenth AC game uses the same quasi-time-travel formula as before, following someone’s past life as a killer. There’s a different vibe with a female protagonist, as you change clothes and flirt your way past guards. The outfit changes are more enjoyable in theory than practice – it adds a new element to the gameplay, but, running across rooftops is more fun than following people while wearing formal dresses. There are other familiar elements: the politically corrupt villains; the stealth/action gameplay; acquiring money and buying weapons. It’s nice to explore and creep up on enemies, which is why the franchise is so successful. But AC: Liberation doesn’t measure up to other chapters (Black Flag and Brotherhood) and signifies too many trips to the well. assassinscreed.ubi.com
