Superquinn has bought a site at Ballywaltrim, Bray, Co Wicklow and if it receives planning permission intends to build a shopping centre at the location.

The shopping centre will feature a Superquinn store and it is expected 220 jobs will be created.

Superquinn managing director Mr Fergal Quinn said yesterday the opening of a shopping centre would "bring significant business to the town".

"Over the years there has been a huge increase in the population of Bray and a corresponding increase in customer demand, yet no significant new shopping centre has been built in the town since 1977," he said.

Superquinn already has a store in Bray, located at Castle Street. If Bray Urban District Council gives planning permission, the centre will be open in less than two years, said a statement.

"Superquinn has deep roots in the town and from our knowledge of this marketplace we are fully confident there is more than enough customer demand for two Superquinn shops in Bray," said Mr Quinn.
