Expenditure on clothing and footwear increased by 19 per cent in 1997 in real terms compared to a 12 per cent increase the year before, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office. A CSO spokesman said that the increase reflected not just a buoyant economy but also lower prices in the industry due to increased competitiveness.
