The Republic and the US formally updated their tax treaty last night, exchanging the official paperwork in Washington. The new treaty, which replaces the 1951 agreement, allocates the taxing rights of each country as well as providing relief from double taxation. A spokesman said it was "comprehensive in scope and generally followed the current OECD model convention" on taxation. It comes into effect on January 1st 1998.
