The volume of retail sales in June was 7.8 per cent ahead of the same month last year, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office. The figures confirm the continued rise in consumer spending, with sales in the three months to June running 1.6 per cent ahead of the previous quarter and 9.8 per cent above the same three months in 1997.
