Nine Japanese financial institutions have closed in Hong Kong in the wake of the Asian financial crisis, and more are expected to follow suit as a result of Japan's `big bang'.

According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), which supervises the banking sector, six banks have closed (including some local representative offices), along with three deposit-taking companies.
